Minet Kenya rallies support for children with Cerebral Palsy

Blurb: The rallying support is part of Minet’s efforts to raise awareness on Cerebral Palsy

Kenya’s renowned insurance brokerage firm, Minet Kenya, has affirmed its commitment to marshal forces with like-minded organisations to enhance financial and kind support for children living with Cerebral Palsy (CP).

Speaking during a visit to the Cerebral Palsy Society of Kenya (CPSK) offices in Nairobi, Minet Kenya’s head of client experience and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Ms Judith Atieno said the campaign is intended to enable children living with CP to lead comfortable and independent lives.

Ms Atieno hailed the partnership between the insurance brokerage firm and CPSK, saying it has eased challenges faced by families and individuals living with CP.

“Minet is committed to walking the journey with CPSK to ensure that children receive medicine and crucial therapy twice a week as well as meeting the nutritional needs for their healthy growth,” said Ms Atieno.

The CPSK visit came ahead of this year’s charity event which is slated to be the inaugural trail run dubbed A Mile for Good to be held on September 13, 2024 at Nairobi’s Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Since 2014, Minet has partnered with CPSK and directly provided support to over 30 children and young adults who have attained crucial milestones that have enabled them to live independently.

CPSK Chairman, Mr Pinto Otieno said that Minet Kenya’s continued support to CPSK will see beneficiaries continue to access therapy, diapers and medicine, which he noted are expensive.

“The partnership with Minet and like-minded organisations and individuals has enabled the society to support hundreds of children and young adults with CP since CPSK’s inception in 1994,” said Mr Otieno.

Medical experts say that Cerebral Palsy is a condition that affects the motor part of the brain, making movement and posture tough or not attainable at all.

The condition affects muscle control and movement. It is usually caused by an injury to the brain before, during or after birth.

“Cerebral” refers to the brain and “palsy” refers to muscle weakness and poor control.

Although someone who has CP has problems moving his/her muscles, this is not because there is something wrong with the muscles or nerves but because of problems in the brain.

CP, a lifelong condition that if generally managed may not deteriorate, is an umbrella term that encompasses a wide variety of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and it is also unique to each and every individual.

Although the brain itself will not get worse, people living with CP usually change over time- sometimes they will get better with others staying the same.

Occasionally, they will get worse, usually because of changing muscle tone or development of joint contractures when no intervention is made.

Currently there is no cure for CP although there are different treatment options for people with the condition.

The options include therapy, medications, surgery, education and support.

By taking advantage of these treatment regimes, people with CP can improve their function, minimize the development of complicating issues and optimize the quality of their lives.

When CP is characterized as mild, it means that a child can move without assistance- their daily life activities are usually not limited.

Medical doctors say that moderate CP cases usually indicate that a child will need some assistive and adaptive technology to accomplish their respective daily activities.

For severe CP cases, a child will need a wheelchair and will experience some difficulty accomplishing daily activities.

No Cerebral Palsy means that the child has no CP sign and if they do get the condition, it’s usually past the brain development stage.

According to medical doctors, the common causes of CP after the brain development stage are traumatic brain injury or encephalopathy.

The signs and symptoms of CP are normally not readily visible at birth except for severe cases.

They however, manifest within the first three to five years of life as both the brain and the child develop.

Although experts say the CP condition cannot be cured, early intervention will often improve a child’s capabilities.

Many children with CP go on to enjoy near normal adult lives “if their disabilities are properly managed”.

CPSK exists to ensure that persons afflicted by CP in Kenya are rehabilitated to enable them realize their full potential.

This is done by offering the best support services through the provision of therapy, promotion of awareness and advocacy of appropriate measures to improve the welfare of the persons with the condition.

During the visit, the team from Minet Kenya was accompanied by members of the Kenya Harlequin Football Club who also expressed their commitment to support the society achieve its goal of helping children living with CP.

The visit is part of Minet’s efforts to raise awareness on Cerebral Palsy to reduce societal stigma as well as to raise funds that will enable the society to facilitate crucial therapy needed by CP children as well as young adults with the condition.
